What’s Happening- May 2020

Something from Mary!

Hutchinson Residents are Needed More Than Ever to #thinkLOCAL
As we prepared for Main Street 2020 for two and a half years, we never imagined a virus could spread across the world, threatening lives and bank accounts, and sending some of us home from work for weeks at a time.

We planned for each business and building owner to have information at their fingertips, considered carefully how to spend precious dollars on marketing and billboards, and how to keep businesses open during construction season. How could anyone prepare for the extension of lost business before the equipment began to move?

But here we are. Equipment has been rolled into position, roads closed, and Main Street is closed to through traffic. And COVID-19 is still here. Businesses need YOU. More specifically…your friends, neighbors and family members need YOU… to spend your dollars LOCALLY.
Local businesses are owned and operated by people YOU know and care about.

I am asking you to:

  • Spend your dollars locally with businesses who have adjusted their hours, services, and routine to manage both virus and construction
  •  Shop online at LOCAL stores and shops
  •  Spend your dollars locally, instead of driving out of town
  •  Support the businesses that donate to your child’s activities and events
  • Attend sales and downtown events this summer when it is safe
  •  When using large online sites-choose their donation options; they’ll donate to a local non-profit of your choice

I’d like you to consider:

  • That cute store downtown has an owner trying to raise their family here.
  •  The restaurant staff donate time and food to other organizations.
  •  Businesses in our community pay a significant portion of the taxes in our city and county. Taxes pay for law enforcement, roads/streets, and many other amenities we take for granted every day.
  •  The service business owner brought their family back to Hutchinson to be part of a true community.
  •  The place just around the corner; the owner moved from another community because they felt welcome here.
  •  That place down the street is run by someone who is managing cancer, and now Covid, and road construction.
  •  The salon owner is not going to sit down for weeks once social distancing is lifted. Be kind when you cannot get in right away. Oh, and don’t get your own bangs.
  • ·Put your dollars where your heart is. Hutchinson is an incredible community, which I and my family have lived for almost 19 years. We came because of a job. We stayed because of the #HutchinsonHeart. You know…. the community that steps up when there is a cancer fundraiser for a family battling disease and bills, and answers the call when a neighbor needs help. The community that griefs together when a child has died, or when people go missing. The city that populates hearts on windows, sidewalks, driveways and signs when a virus threatens. The community that has made thousands of sewn fabric masks to give to those on the front lines, and hands out food, while it snows, to people who line up for blocks. The community that creates a parade to celebrate someone during 100 years young.

This is Hutchinson.

Next year the road will be complete, we’ll be able to shake hands and hug. Let’s each do our part to make sure everyone is there with us when we come back together.

Put your money where your heart is.

Dairy Day- CANCELED

For the health and well being of our community, Dairy Day has been postponed until June 4, 2021.
The Agri- Business Committee works diligently to support the Agriculture Community. Although Dairy Day will not take place this year, the committee is working on additional support for our producers.
We encourage everyone to thank a farmer, be safe for farmers and give them room on the roads as they travel from field to field planting next year’s food for our tables.

If you know a farmer struggling with the overwhelming work, COVID crisis and the strains of current Ag. issues, please provide them with the support number for free and confidential counseling.

Tourism Marketing Grant Available!

Every event watches the bottom line to make the most out of every dollar and every event has the same need –  people!

Have no Fear – Help is Here…. The Hutchinson Area Chamber of Commerce and Tourism has a grant to help offset marketing costs to get people to come to your event- Here are the two biggest things to know:

  1.  Marketing (for the grant) must be outside a 30 mile radius of Hutchinson, MN.
  2. The Chamber/Tourism logo has to be included in the ad or marketing medium.

Through our tourism program, we work to attract more people to Hutchinson, MN. We have much to offer, and our businesses are here to serve those who visit. More people in Hutchinson generates more revenue for our businesses…. Which generates more tax revenue…. Which repairs our streets, keeps police officers in our neighborhoods, keeps our water clean… you get where I am going with that.

Several events have applied and received Tourism Marketing Grant money – Hutchinson Area Boat and RV Show, The Big Little Hunting & Fishing Expo, Minnesota Pottery Festival, Hutchinson Jaycee Water Carnival, RiverSong, McLeod County Fair and Minnesota Garlic Festival.

Event Marketing Tip: When you are setting up a marketing plan, be sure to diversify. Publications, radio, posters and social media are all important in today’s world. Be sure you are doing everything to set your event up for success. Focusing too heavily on only one of these options can drastically reduce your attendance.

We look forward to receiving your application and we’re happy to answer any questions you may have.

“We love these!”

table tent for November 2013

“We love these!”  This is what we often hear when people refer to the Hutchinson Chamber Table Tents, you know those things on the tables at our area restaurants that lists what’s happening in Hutchinson.  Every few months someone stops in to ask about them, how they are made, what our process is, etc.  These people want to bring the information back to their town, so their community can do it too.  We know the people in Hutchinson are thankful for them.  When we are out delivering the tents we often get comments about how excited people are to see what will be happening in the next few months.

Table tents are printed quarterly for events held in Hutchinson. Any organization may submit an event for the quarterly table tents at a cost of $20.00 for Chamber members and $30.00 for non-members, per event.  Events may be submitted at any time for future events, but must be submitted no later than the following deadlines per quarter:

Table Tents Schedule:
1st Quarter (January, February, March) Deadline to submit events for these months is December 1st
2nd Quarter (April, May, June) Deadline to submit events for these months is March 1st
3rd Quarter (July, August, September) Deadline to submit events for these months is June 1st
4th Quarter (October, November, December) Deadline to submit events for these months is September 1st

A table tent listing consists of: the event name, event date, and event location.

We also ask the people who are submitting the event  to list their event on the online community calendar.  This is a great way to give more details about the event.  Submitting an event to the online community calendar is easy and FREE!

To submit an event online:
1. Go to www.explorehutchinson.com
2. Click “Community Calendar”
3. Click “Submit New Event” under where it says “View Full Calendar”
4. Enter event information & click submit for approval

Table tent events may be submitted via email to Gina, via phone at 320-234-0786, or in person at the Hutchinson Chamber & Tourism office.

This is a service that we truly enjoy being able to provide for our  community, and we are happy to hear that so many other people appreciate them!

Hutchinson Sculpture Stroll

The Hutchinson Sculpture Stroll brings art into the public sphere for the enjoyment of locals and visitors alike.

Since 2013, the City of Hutchinson Public Arts Commission is credited with bringing the high-quality work of local and regional artists through downtown Hutchinson and along the Luce Line Trail.

The Sculpture Stroll is home to permanent sculptures and temporary sculptures.  The temporary sculptures are on loan from regional artists for one year. The permanent sculptures express important aspects of the Hutchinson story.
