There’s always so much excitement surrounding events. Is it the fact that you get to dress up for the night? Maybe you just can’t wait to find out what amazing food will be at your fingertips. Whatever the anticipation might be, there is nothing that makes a night feel more special than walking into a well-decorated venue – you can see the hard work that went into the evening and it truly makes all the difference.

About Compass Occasions

Compass Occasions is an event planning company based in Hutchinson, MN that organizes standout events for the groups and the businesses they work with.  The co-founders, Kayla Alexander and Valerie Mackenthun, are in their third year of business, but their journey started back in 2014 after they volunteered to help coordinate the Hutchinson Center for the Arts Annual Night for the Arts Gala. After helping with the gala, the pair took a 12-day road trip between San Francisco and Seattle where they talked non-stop about their shared love for the people, planning and details that are involved in organizing an event.

When they returned to Hutchinson, Valerie and Kayla were approached by a few local business owners who needed help coordinating their events.  “We were urged to make it official,” said Kayla and Valerie, and after a few meetings with the Southwest Initiative Foundation (a local non-profit that helps individuals start new businesses) Compass Occasions was ready to do just that.

The Fine Details

Compass Occasions specializes in three different types of event planning:

  • Non-Profit/Fundraisers
  • Corporate Events
  •  Weddings
    • Styling & design, rentals, and set up/tear down
    • Full coordination | Day of coordination | “Getting started package”

No matter what type of event they are planning, Compass Occasions is there to provide a unique experience that takes their clients’ events to the next level. Decorating is a fun and important factor in making a special occasion “special”, but it isn’t the primary focus for Valerie and Kayla. They create the best experiences by concentrating on “behind the scenes” details such as the event budget, internal timelines, vendor execution, and day-of logistics. They bring their clients’ visions to life, help guide the process, and make sure everything will go smoothly on the day of the event.

It’s easy to forget the amount of work and detail that goes into event planning – often times events are taken on by employees in addition to their workload. Compass Occasions has found that their services save their clients both time and money. An event planned by Compass Occasions will look fantastic and operate smoothly because of the hard work, organization, and attention to detail these ladies commit to each occasion.

Probably most of you have been to an all-you-can-eat food buffet at some point in your life. You know…. Some of you hover on the meat and potato end, some gravitate to the salad bar, I hang out by the ice cream and cake.

No matter what we each want or need, we have options available to satisfy your hunger, cravings and sustenance needs.

Much like that food buffet, the Chamber has something for everyone. No matter what your business is: small, large, growing, struggling, maintaining, established, brand spanking new, the chamber has something to help you to grow stronger, faster, larger, or maintain an even keel. We have also helped businesses as they chose to close to help employees, managed inventory, and say goodbye with grace and dignity.

Some businesses just simply want to support a business organization that works to promote, support and engage the business community, some are members because of the insurance discounts they receive for being a member, and some “just wanna have fun” thank you Cindy Lauper for putting that in my head for the day…. we have golf, arts & crafts, annual event (2018- 80’s Prom Theme) and more to just have fun with other business people.

I was on social media earlier today, and I noticed something….. RiverSong is looking for Volunteers. Like most non-profits and events, they need help making things happen before and during the event. They were even looking for someone to attend Music in the Park and promote RiverSong- genius!

Why am I telling you this…. Well…. isn’t it fabulous that Music in the Park continues thanks to RiverSong and Historic Hutchinson!?? It does not fit the Chamber’s mission and these two groups who we see and work with every week in the summer were ready to take it on. We know they will be able to make this weekly summer event HUGE and even more successful! No worries- we’ll still be able to help you with your questions, just like other community events!

This is just ONE example of hundreds, dare I say thousands, of examples of how this community, the people who live here, the organizations among us WORK together, side by side to make things happen!

Hutchinson Ambassadors run Taste of Hutchinson, along-side the Chamber as we host the Annual Arts & Crafts Festival. Who is serving food??? Many local non-profits raise money serving up cheese curds, kettle corn and other tasty treats. Surrounding businesses make adjustments because they recognize the importance of this event to our local economy.

Throughout the year you’ll see groups, organizations and businesses working together. We’re told by other chambers and cities they see Hutchinson as unique. Many communities have squabbling and in-fighting which damages relationships. We’re really lucky here as we recognize our differences, but respect positions and opinions. Yes, we have some people who don’t play nice, but I choose to see the good.

Mark your calendars for April 14th, Bring It Home Expo at the McLeod County Fairgrounds. Jaycee Pancake Breakfast, Jaycee booth curtains, Wheel and Cog Children’s area, over 100 businesses participating in some way, shape or form. All of us TOGETHER! (now I have High School Musical in my head.)

Bring It Home Family Fun & Business Expo

Bring It Home Family Fun & Business Expo Saturday April 14 2018 at McLeod County Fairgrounds

Registration for the Bring It Home Family Fun & Business Expo is now open.  Register by March 2nd to take advantage of early-bird pricing!  Are you not familiar with the Bring It Home Expo?  This event is a great way to showcase to our community what your business does.  All participating businesses/organizations must be located within a 10 mile radius of Hutchinson.  The Bring It Home Committee hosts this event to showcase what is in Hutchinson, and remind our community members that there is no need to leave Hutchinson to purchases the goods and services that you may need.

This one day expo is popular in our community, and with all age ranges.  There are activities for children and a food court set up for people to sit, relax, and enjoy some local food options.

Table Tent Deadline: March 1st, 2018!

Are you planning an event for April, May or June 2018?  Make sure you get your event added to the Table Tents!  The deadline to add events for the 2nd quarter is March 1st.  The cost is $20/listing for Chamber Members and $30/listing for non-members.  We print 900 table tents and deliver them around the community.  An image of the table tent is also shared on social media.  The last time we shared an image of the table tent on our Facebook page, it had over 2,000 views!
