Something from Mary

I suppose the recent events at the Faribault Chamber of Commerce are still sitting close to my heart as I write this. Sometimes I sit down to write an article, and who knows what will happen when I type.

As we begin a new year, a few things come to mind as you go into a new business year…

  1. Business Emergency Plans. These ‘plans’ in case of an emergency, including a staff lose, fire, or any number of things can help employees know how to respond to emergencies and perhaps tragedies. We must keep going… our minds know this… but perhaps our hearts will struggle.
  2. Up-to-date Procedures. How timely, as we here at the Hutchinson Chamber will be going through staff transition as Matt moves over to Citizens Bank. Keeping daily, weekly, monthly and annual procedures current will help those coming in to take over duties, no matter the situation. Allowing people to “just know” what they do, or “I have it all up here” (imagine the motion of them taping at their noggin) simply won’t help anyone left to carry on or pick up where someone has left off.
  3. Know Your Employees. Know what is happening in their lives. Watch for signs, listen for cues, offer assistance and community resources. We cannot save everyone, but gol’ darn it, let’s try. Make yourself familiar with various local organizations that can help in the cases of Domestic and Sexual Assault, Homelessness, Addiction, Depression, or Suicide Intervention/Prevention.

As I bid you Happy New Year’s, my hope and wish for you and your employees is truly a SAFE, HAPPY and SUCCESSFUL 2017!

Non-Emergency situations are invited by Chief Hatten to call 320-587-2242 and speak with an officer of investigator to explore their options. Chief Hatten also offers presenters for work groups and others.

Press Release: MITGI Finalist for 2017 Community Impact Awards by Minnesota Business Magazine

HUTCHINSON, MN – December 19, 2016

MITGI has been honored as a finalist for a 2017 Community Impact Award from Minnesota Business magazine in the Youth Initiative category.  This award category recognizes companies for creating or supporting programs designed to enable youth to develop abilities in areas such as leadership, social responsibility, skilled trades, education, and community involvement.

“Over the past decade, MITGI has dedicated company resources and employee talents to help students explore and prepare for careers in manufacturing,” explains Eric Lipke, MITGI President.  “We’re proud of the collaborative environment that has developed in the Hutchinson community between Ridgewater College, Hutchinson Public Schools, Hutchison Area Chamber of Commerce, Hutchinson EDA, and Made in McLeod manufacturers.  These efforts have resulted in new curriculum and school facilities, increased enrollment in manufacturing related classes, alignment between students and local employers, and potential cost savings for graduates.”

Recognizing the impact that new perspective and repositioned resources could have on the local community, MITGI has worked to build support by:

  • Providing tours that showcase different types of facilities, work environments, and career opportunities
  • Giving MITGI-sponsored scholarships to help students defray the costs of education and connect the business to the student
  • Offering paid job shadowing and internships to provide practical work experience while exploring the types of jobs possible in manufacturing
  • Participating in advisory boards to ensure that opportunities in education and business exist for students when they are ready to work
  • Aligning business leaders and schools to create common goals and secure resources, including raising more than $1.2 million for Hutchinson High School
  • Hosting meetings and tours with legislative leaders and staff, including Senators Klobuchar and Franken
  • Promoting all of these activities and events to draw local, regional, statewide, and national exposure to the successes of these unprecedented local partnerships

“MITGI is proud to be a leader in the efforts to build the foundation for a thriving community and well-prepared workforce,” describes Sheila Murphy, MITGI Director of HR and Safety.  “We look forward to working within our community to help support and promote the continued growth of manufacturing.”

The winners in each category will be announced at the 2017 Community Impact Awards event, held on February 23, 2017 at Aria in Downtown Minneapolis.  Each category winner will be featured in the March 2017 issue of Minnesota Business magazine.

Located in Hutchinson, MN, MITGI manufactures and markets standard and custom cutting tools. Combining innovation with quality and repeatability, MITGI tools have become the product of choice in many R&D departments and manufacturing facilities that serve medical device manufacturing, aerospace, automotive, and rapid prototyping industries. MITGI is the recipient of the Image Award (2014 & 2015, Minnesota Business Manufacturing Award), Paragon of Leadership Award (Sheila Murphy, 2016, Minnesota Business Community Impact Awards), 100 Best Companies to Work for Award (2015, Minnesota Business), and the Top 150 Workplaces Award (2015 & 2016, Star Tribune).

Press Release: Hutchinson, Litchfield, Bolton & Menk Receive Asphalt Paving Awards

HUTCHINSON, LITCHFIELD, BOLTON & MENK RECEIVE ASPHALT PAVING AWARDS

The Cities of Hutchinson and Litchfield, and Bolton & Menk, Inc. received awards from MnDOT Office of Materials & Road Research at the 63rd Annual Asphalt Conference. Both the Hutchinson Municipal Airport and Litchfield Municipal Airport were honored with Merit Awards for Bituminous Surfacing for an intermediate airport.

Both projects involved rehabilitation of the runway, taxiway, and apron at the Airports. The process of full-depth reclamation (FDR) was applied to both Airports. FDR is the process of pulverizing the existing bituminous and blending with the underlying aggregate base to create a reclaimed asphalt base course. Four inches of new bituminous was then paved over the reclaimed asphalt base. Utilizing this process resulted in recycling all the material on-site and substantially reducing the project cost.

The Hutchison Airport project was completed in the fall of 2015. The project was phased to minimize the impact to aerial sprayers during the fall months when crop spraying is at its peak. The contractor, Duininck, Inc., was able to keep the runway open while working on the taxiway and apron, allowing aerial spraying for the region to continue.

The Litchfield Airport project was completed in the summer of 2016. The contractor, Duininck, Inc., was successful in having the Airport opened early enough in the summer for the Airport to host their fly-in pancake breakfast. Both projects were completed on-time and under budget.

Bolton & Menk, Inc., ranked in the Top 500 Engineering Firms by Engineering News Record (ENR), provides a broad range of engineering, surveying, planning, and environmental services to communities and agencies in Minnesota, Iowa, and North Dakota. In serving public sector and private clients of all sizes for more than 65 years, Bolton & Menk has become experts in providing quality professional services.

Something from Matt & Mary: Membership 2017

During this time of year, many of us celebrate the holidays with family and friends by eating delicious food, giving gifts and getting together to celebrate the time gone by… And I think I can safely say that we have all been a part of a get together or party that was just plain not for you.  That one family member who brings the fruitcake no one eats, the friend who drags you to the bar or party when all you want to do is curl up on the couch with Netflix, the work party that, well, not a lot of people want to spend more of their personal time at work…. You get my drift.  So where am I going with this?  There is no one, cookie-cutter way of dealing with the holidays.  What works for some people does not work for others, and there is nothing wrong with that!  We all have different wants and needs when it comes to this time of the year and our diversity is what makes us unique.  Embrace it!  Read more here:
